Several years ago, to help boost the economy during the slower shopping months of the summer – July and August – many states decided to not collect taxes on various items for a temporary and set amount of time – typically a weekend. This quickly became known as Tax Free Weekend.
Since Tax Free Weekend occurs during the latter part of July to the first of August, it can be a great way to save on back to school expenses.
A couple of years ago, I shared my strategy for saving more during Tax Free Weekend with Rachel Calderon and News 9, but if you missed it, here’s a list of my top 3 Tips For Tax Free Weekend Shopping.
3 Tips For Tax Free Weekend Shopping
Have a Plan
Impulsive spending doesn’t save money. Having a plan does. Make a list of things you NEED. Then make a list of the things you WANT. Find the best prices on your needs list, but only buy your wants if you find a rock bottom deal. Wants can wait until the price is exactly right.
Do Your Homework
Keep in mind that tax free weekend really equates to only 7-10% savings depending on the tax rate in your city. That’s why it’s important to check retailer’s sales flyers to see where you can get the best [sale] price on the items you need. Remember, if the things you want aren’t offered at a deep discount, this isn’t the time to buy them.
Stack Your Savings
Finding the sales, using coupons AND not paying sales tax will help you stack your savings for the very best deals. For instance, Kohl’s usually offers $10 Kohl’s Cash for every $50 you spend. Combine this with the in-store promotions running during tax free weekend and you’ll save 30% or greater!
If you play your cards right, Tax Free Weekend can equate to huge savings on necessities for your family and maybe even a few of the items on your wish list.
